Flomatik celebrates one year of sustainability partnership with Ecologi

The United Nations’ sustainability blueprint has spurred a whole host of changes across the globe in recent years — addressing challenges relating to inequality, climate change and social justice, to name just a few. But with the 2030 deadline edging closer, the pace of progress required to deliver on every one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) demands greater attention. 

Aware that our work as a network services operator inherently relies on energy-intensive infrastructure to allow us to operate, we’re committed to curbing our environmental impact as much as possible. Our partnership with carbon-footprinting platform Ecologi has been instrumental in helping us achieve our green goals.

Having marked our one-year milestone of collaborating with the firm in April, here’s further detail about the remarkable progress we’ve made so far…

What is Ecologi’s approach to sustainability?

Ecologi is a renowned, subscription-based sustainability platform that offers individuals and organisations the opportunity to actively contribute to carbon reduction projects around the world — including reforestation initiatives, renewable energy projects, and more. By partnering with Ecologi, Flomatik has been able to offset its carbon emissions and bolster initiatives that have a tangible positive impact on the planet. 

Carbon offsetting and reforestation

Reforestation and protection are vital for carbon offsetting, as healthy trees sequester CO2 and restore ecosystems, storing more carbon and promoting biodiversity. They also bring co-benefits for local communities — including employment, gender equality, new income streams, diverse food sources, and improved facilities. 

Ecologi supports responsible tree planting by partnering with community-led projects, using appropriate species and guarding against threats, and Flomatik is proud to be able to contribute to these carefully-selected investments. In 12 months, we’ve funded the planting of 6,105 trees across 16 projects spanning Madagascar and Mozambique to Peru and Ecuador!

Renewable energy projects 

In addition to carbon offsetting, Flomatik and Ecologi have collaborated on supporting numerous renewable energy projects across the globe — investing in wind farms, solar installations, and other clean energy initiatives to contribute to the transition towards a low-carbon future. These projects not only reduce reliance on fossil fuels but also create employment opportunities and foster technological advancements in the renewable energy sector.

The funding of a solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation project in Indonesia is just one of the many highlights. Preventing 33,775 tonnes of CO2e emissions each year, the installations are helping to displace polluting energy sources with cleaner power on the island of Lombok, have provided 69 local jobs, and include 18 community development activities. 

Transparent tracking and reporting

With a comprehensive dashboard that allows us to track and monitor the progress of our sustainability efforts in real-time, we’re able to engage our stakeholders, customers, and employees by sharing the positive impact we are making together. People are truly the backbone of every successful green initiative, and the route to carbon net zero requires true collaboration to make a real difference.

We’re proud to contribute to mangrove and tree plantations for:

• Every new employee who has successfully passed probation
• Every 1,000 miles driven by our field teams
• Staff members’ 5 and 10-year work anniversaries
• Every 5,000 homes or 5,000 metres designed
• Each successful completion of a site closure project
• Every new customer or workstream awarded (or contribution to a new project).

We previously reported that our business had offset 265.88 tonnes of carbon between April and December 2022 — placing our positive offset value at 170.86 tonnes, to balance our operations. We’re incredibly proud to have seen that figure evolve since then, having offset 436.35 tonnes of CO2e to date as of June 2023. That’s the equivalent of 335 long haul flights, 1,309 square metres of sea ice saved, and 1,082,584 miles driven in a car.

Encouraging employee engagement

Our partnership with Ecologi extends beyond carbon offsetting and renewable energy investments. We actively encourage our employees to participate in Ecologi’s individual subscription model too, which allows them to offset their personal carbon footprint and support reforestation projects of their own accord. This collective effort not only aligns with Flomatik’s vibrant corporate values, but also empowers our team members to make a positive difference in their personal lives. 

As we celebrate one year of collaboration with Ecologi, Flomatik is proud to reflect on our sustainability journey. Through our partnership, we have made significant strides in reducing our carbon footprint and promoting environmental stewardship within the telecoms sector.
